Nassau, Bahamas
Nassau
is the capital of the Bahamas, on the northeastern edge of New Providence
Island. Lynden Pindling International Airport, the major airport
for the Bahamas, is located about 16 kilometres or 10 miles west
of downtown Nassau, and has daily flights to major cities in the
United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean.
Nassau has an attractive harbour, a colourful blend
of old world and colonial architecture and a busy port. The tropical
climate and natural beauty of the Bahamas has made Nassau a popular
tourist destination, with a reputation for relaxing days and an
exciting nightlife.
Summertime temperatures rarely exceed 33 degrees
Celsius (92 degrees Fahrenheit) and the winter months have daytime
temperatures between 20 and 26 °C (68 and 80 °F), rarely
falling below 10 °C or 50 °F.
Nassau beaches
Western Esplanade
Activities abound in this beach area, which is
also referred to as “Long Wharf.” The Western Esplanade
is located near downtown Nassau and is just a few minutes from the
cruise ship dock. It has restroom facilities and is the site for
the annual Spring Break activities. On any given Saturday, one can
find Bahamians hosting “cook-outs” and other fundraising
activities on the street level of the beach.
Nassau Landmarks and Attractions
Parliament
Building
Take a walk around Old Town, an interesting mixture
of abandoned buildings and bright Caribbean structures. It doesn't
take long to get away from the over-scrubbed tourist areas in the
very center. Walk ten minutes uphill to the pink Parliament Building,
which still has a statue of an enthroned Queen Victoria out front.
Ardastra Gardens & Conservation Center
More than 300 birds, mammals and reptiles from
The Islands Of The Bahamas, the Caribbean, Latin America and around
the world are on display among acres of lush tropical gardens.
National Art Gallery Of The Bahamas
Located at the historic Villa Doyle, a newly restored
19th century mansion, the museum houses the National Collection
of Bahamian artworks including paintings, sculpture, works on paper,
textiles, ceramics, photography and other mixed media works. The
quality of art is rather uneven to say the least, but the renovated
building — once the residence of the Chief Justice —
is a sight in itself.
Pirates of Nassau
Pirates of Nassau is a world-class pirate attraction
in the heart of downtown Nassau. Experience the true story of pirates
in an amazing, historically accurate, interactive environment, which
will entertain, excite and educate visitors of all ages. Recreations
of a pirate town, a pirate ship and a pirate battle, with a few
real artifacts mixed in. Cheesy, but fun.
